Q: Discomfitingest love song of 2007?

A: I'm nearly finished with Six Feet Under, and this Deerhoof song reminds me of most of the relationships portrayed therein.

Matchbook Seeks Maniac

Friend Opportunity [buy], 2007

The song's been remixed for the soundtrack to Dedication, directed by Justin Theroux (who, incidentally, portrayed one of the few non-matchbook types on SFU).

I was never much of a Deerhoof fan before, but Friend Opportunity is among the best albums of 2007.

More Six Feet Under/Sopranos analysis forthcoming. I'm holding off, so as to be as irrelevant as possible.

Q: Is Alberto Gonzales just not that into (war crimes trib)you(nals)?

President George W. Bush is so frightened, lonelyAs I came into this lonely house last night
I looked at all my windows but I couldn't find one light

I found you on that road to Mexico
And now, my love, I beg
Please, oh, please, don't go

One day married, next day free
Broken hearts for you and me

It's a sin for you to get a Mexican divorce

Finding love takes so long
Walking out must be wrong

It's a sin for you to get a Mexican divorce

Q: How strange is your love, Mary Worth?

A: If you follow the Comics Curmudgeon — and you should, by the way — you know that Mary Worth (of Mary Worth fame) recently took an unexpected yet expectedly boring trip to Vietnam, to chase some humanitarian dude she wanted to get on.

Upon finding him, she began the arduous task of guilting him into returning home. And I mean "arduous" as in "for readers," because it involved several weeks of circular dialogue. I had kind of hoped the whole storyline would be a little more Apocalypse Nowey, but not so much.

Anyway. In tribute to Mary Worth's strange, burning love, I present to you this cut from Air's newly released Pocket Symphony.

Air's 'Pocket Symphony'

SPEAKING OF STRANGE, BURNING LOVES: In January, I posted an entry on the Boston band the Sterns, wherein I expressed some confusion over the lyrics of the tainted-love song "Supreme Girl." An anonymous commenter, who may or may not been a PR flak, kindly set me straight:
Re the on "Supreme Girl" (The Sterns) - from their bio on myspace - Funny Stuff I had no idea this is what they were saying but it makes sense after reading Alex Stern's quote:

"That's actually a love song written from the perspective of [Supreme Court one-time nominee and Dubya pal] Harriet Myers and George Bush," winks Alex. "She was obviously a bad nominee but I felt a certain amount of sympathy for her."
Once you realize this, the song becomes 1000% awesomer. I haven't disabled the mp3 link yet, so check it out.

Q: Why am I pouring some Sugar on you?

A: In the name of love.

Sugar - Besides

Bob Mould's tale of star-crossed, unrequited love was always one of my favorite songs as a high schooler, possibly because I was always such a star-crossed, unrequited lover. The pleady, doomed undertones of its lyrics
How can I explain away / Something that I haven't done?
And if you can't trust me now / You'll never trust in anyone
With all the crazy doubts you've got / I love you even still
But if I can't change your mind / Then no one will
— always struck a chord.

The song originally appeared in 1992 on Copper Blue, Mould's first project post-Hüsker Dü and, ironically, his biggest hit. The alternate version above is from the odds 'n sods collection Besides. Fire it up.

Q: Who do you love?

A: Ted Leo and the Pharmacists! The band's forthcoming Living with the Living has leaked, and T.A.M.S.Y.'s got the hook-up.

Check out these fine tracks, and then do what I'm doing and buy the album, lest my friend at Touch & Go yell at me. And because it's really very good.

The first song was previously available on Pitchfork. The second is T.A.M.S.Y.'s very own almost-Valentine's Day sort-of-EXCLUSIVE.

P.S.: And remember to check out one of the band's 45,000 annual live shows.

UPDATE: See comments.

Q: Will you marry me?

A: Yes, yes you will! To find out how loveless our marriage will be, take my OKCupid MatchMe test. It's 15 quick questions to determine our romantic compatibility.

So far, the top score is 67%, perhaps an indication that I will never find love. Someone, please, unbreak my heart.
